With so many premium automakers having jumped on the SUV->ke145 bandwagon in recent years, you'd think that all companies will eventually build one. That's an interesting thought if we also include high-end manufacturers such as Ferrari,->ke252 McLaren,->ke284 and Koenigsegg,->ke43 and a scenario that's been covered by several reports as of 2016. And, that's not surprising given that Lamborghini->ke44 has already confirmed it's working on an SUV, and both Bentley->ke15 and Maserati->ke51 have revealed theirs.

So are any of these brands looking to launch an SUV anytime soon? McLaren has already said no to it several times in the past, although it recently admitted that MSO could develop one. Now, Koenigsegg has joined the "no SUV" group with company boss Christian von Koenigsegg saying he simply doesn't want to build one, even though he can imagine a wild product.

“It’d be a pretty wild SUV because you’d have a big tunnel in the center, huge sills, bucket seats. I think it could be a thing the market could accept. But I’m just not a fan of SUVs. To me they are fundamentally flawed. Sure we could sell them, but I don’t want to,” he told TopGear.

On the other hand, von Koenigsegg confirmed that his company is looking beyond two-door supercars,->ke177 with a high-performance sedan->ke142 on the drawing board. “It’s a project we’ve been working on for quite some time. I’d be surprised if that’s the next thing we release -- because we’re getting such a good response for our traditional type of supercars -- but it’s a car I’d love to do," he added.

All told, a four-door Koenigsegg is in the making as we speak, but don't expect it to hit dealerships anytime soon, as the company is busy enough as it is with the new Regera->ke5077 and final iterations of the Agera.->ke3628

Why it matters

Each time an automaker such as Koenigsegg says no to SUVs, a big smile grows across my face. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate SUVs, I just think that the current market is driven maybe a bit too much by profits, with fewer full-fledged enthusiast vehicles up for grabs. On the other hand, a Koenigsegg sedan would be awesome. Unlike an SUV, a sleek four-door could deliver performance similar to a supercar and will allow a brand to expand without diluting its heritage to the point where all is sacrificed for the sake of profits. Another reason why we should all be excited about a Koenigsegg-badged sedan is that this four-door will probably sweep anything in its path. With the electric motors of the Regera hybrid capable of nearly 700 horsepower, Koenigsegg could easily develop the quickest and most powerful EV and give Tesla one more reason to update the Model S. We might have to wait a few more years for Koenigsegg to prepare its sedan, but the result will be a wild four-door that will most likely set new benchmarks in its segment.
