Lamborghini Aventador SV Jota Spotted On The Nürburgring; Is Porsche's Record In Danger?

Will Lambo recapture the crown with a more extreme Aventador?

Remember the mean, camouflaged Lamborghini Aventador we spotted on the road last week? The Italian supercar is back into the wild, but this time around it was spotted on the Nurburgring track. It sure seems Lambo is readying something really hot and maybe even a new record for production cars on the German track. As we mentioned last week, this beefed-up version of the Aventador is supposed to sit atop the incredible SV. Word has it Lambo will use it to revive the Jota name, first used on a prototype and limited-edition version of the Miura and then on a limited-edition of the Diablo SE30.

One quick look at the test car and you can see why Lambo added Jota next to the "SV" badge. Much like on the Miura and Diablo, the aerodynamics are more aggressive, the air vents are larger, and the engine hood seems to come from a full-blown race car. Of course, the V-12 engine will get upgrades of its own, with output expected to increase to somewhere around 800 horsepower.

So what's it doing on the Green Hell?

Well, Nurburgring tests are now a natural step in the development of performance cars, so the Jota's presence on the German track is far from surprising. But the big question here is whether Lambo is cooking up a new Nurburgring record for production cars. The Aventador SV is already among the fastest cars around the 'Ring, but its benchmark from 2015 has been surpassed by both the Lamborghini Huracan Performante and the Porsche 911 GT2 RS. While the fact that the Huracan Performance is quicker than the Aventador SV might not be a problem for Lamborghini, the fact that Porsche took the crown by a significant margin in 2017 is.

The 911 GT2 RS lapped the Nordschleife in an amazing 6:47 minutes, almost five seconds quicker than the Huracan Peformante and some 12 clicks faster than the Aventador SV. An 800-horsepower Aventador with extreme aerodynamics could defeat the GT2 RS, and the Italians are probably testing just that. We won't know for sure what's going on until later this year, but I sure hope we get a video of the SV Jota doing its thing around the 'Ring soon.
