Lamborghini introduced the Urus just last December, ushering in a hot new competitor for the high-end performance SUV segment that matched a tall-riding, opulent body style with the traditional Raging Bull qualities of head-turning style and neck-snapping performance. Naturally, as the first-ever SUV from Lamborghini, we wanna know what it can do - both on the road, and off it. Thankfully, it’s looking like the brand is gearing up to show us exactly what the Urus is capable of.

The Full Story

First up, a few specs.

The Lamborghini Urus uses a front-engine, AWD drivetrain layout, with motivation provided by a turbocharged V-8 powerplant. Put your foot down, and it’ll create upwards of 641 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque, all of which is sent to the pavement through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Properly applied, it’s enough to slingshot the large SUV to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds, with a top speed rated at 190 mph.

The Urus also offers multiple drive modes, including taller suspension settings and beefed-up traction control settings for off-roading and sandy surfaces. Which begs the question - how does this thing tackle the rough stuff?

Apparently, Lamborghini is eager to show us, as revealed in a recent report from Autocar that says the Italian sports car maker is looking to enter the SUV in an upcoming “all-roads competition.”

While neglecting to provide many details, Autocar’s murky sources did say an official announcement is expected by the end of the year.

This latest rumor follows the recent announcement that Bentley (another brand under the vast Volkswagen Auto Group umbrella) will test its first-ever SUV, the Bentayga, on the treacherous twists and turns of America’s Mountain, also known as Pikes’ Peak, later this summer. The Colorado venue is home to a world-famous annual hill climb event that takes place every June, and as you might imagine, the heavy, luxury-laden Bentayga will have its work cut out for it against the hardcore racing machines that are expected to show. Luckily, Bentley hired two-time Pikes Peak champion Rhys Millen to wheel the thing, and he should be able to provide the SUV with every opportunity to perform well.

While Lambo won’t necessarily head to Colorado to chase down Bentley, Autocar does report that the brand will consider the Bentayga’s performance there as a “benchmark.”

“Lamborghini welcomes challenges, but whatever we do will be quite different from other brands,” said Stefano Domenicali, CEO at Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. “We will choose a form of competition intended only for our class of vehicle. Our car has many faces. You can enjoy its beauty, it is very fast on the track, very fast off road and very fast on gravel. We will choose something that combines all of these things.”

This renewed interest in motorsport comes as a contrast to the Volkswagen Group’s overarching focus on providing additional eco-friendly alternatives through the expansion of its all-electric powertrain technology.

At the same time, VW is also gearing up to show it’s go-faster prowess in other ways, including running an all-electric racing prototype at Pike’s Peak and talk of an all-electric rallycross support series for Formula E.

Regardless, we’re certainly excited to see the $200,000 Urus wheeled in anger, especially if it’s well off the beaten path. Make it happen, Lambo! And don’t forget to bring along some worthy competitors, like the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and that Bentley we were just talking about.
