A two-door rival for the Bentley Bentayga?

The auto industry has become increasingly competitive in recent years, and it seems that a lot of carmakers are set on launching the "world’s first" anything. With so many niches and technology around, this mission is becoming harder and harder each year, but some companies still find ways to brag about introducing something entirely new. Land Rover is the latest to join the pack with the Range Rover SV Coupe. Launched at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show, it’s essentially a two-door version of the big Range Rover, and it’s described as the "world’s first full-size luxury SUV coupe." Yey marketing!

The new model has heavily raked C-pillars and a slightly inclined roofline

Created by the folks over at JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations division, the SV Coupe reminds of the Range Rover Classic from the 1970s. It also had only two doors and significantly longer rear windows that made it look like a shooting brake on stilts. But, unlike its predecessor, the new model has heavily raked C-pillars and a slightly inclined roofline. Granted, it’s not exactly a coupe, but it’s definitely sportier than its spiritual predecessor. The SV Coupe also sports unique grille and side vent designs and its the first Range Rover available with 23-inch wheels.

The two-door SUV is also about enhanced luxury, as it features semi-aniline leather front seats with a unique diamond quilt design. Customers can choose from four front-to-rear contrast interior color, or a range of single-tone interior hues. Both are complemented by a choice of three wood veneers. This model also marks the debut of Nautica, a new trim that brings together walnut and sycamore.

Unlike the regular Range Rover, the SV Coupe is available with the supercharged, 5.0-liter V-8 engine exclusively. The unit is rated at 565 PS and 700 Nm of torque (557 horsepower and 516 pound-feet) and enables the SUV to hit 60 mph from a standing start in just five seconds, to go with a top speed of 165 mph. These figures make the SV Coupe the fastest full-size Range Rover ever. The suspension was also retuned to provide a more driver-focused experience than the standard Range Rover, with the ride height lowered by 8 mm (0.3 inches).

The coupe-style SUV will be assembled by hand at the SVO Technical Centre in Warwickshire, and only 999 examples will be made

The coupe-style SUV will be assembled by hand at the SVO Technical Centre in Warwickshire, and only 999 examples will be made. It will be available globally, but for the time being, there’s no pricing information for the U.S. market. It the U.K., it will retail from £240,000. That’s around £60,000 more than the most expensive model to date, the SVAutobiography LWB. I guess Land Rover is aiming the SV Coupe at the Bentley Bentayga, Lamborghini Urus, and the upcoming Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

Nearly 50 years ago, Land Rover created the luxury SUV sector with the introduction of the Range Rover. Now it’s defining a new genre with the world’s first full-size luxury SUV coupé: the limited-edition two-door Range Rover SV Coupé.

Created by Land Rover Design and Special Vehicle Operations, SV Coupé is an exemplar of Range Rover design, craftsmanship and capability. It features a seductive body allied to the next-generation of cabin luxury – with the peerless all-terrain ability expected from Range Rover. No more than 999 will be hand-crafted by SVO for clients worldwide.

“The Range Rover SV Coupé is a celebration of the Range Rover bloodline. With a dramatic two-door silhouette, this breath-taking four seat coupé alludes to its unique heritage while being thoroughly modern and contemporary. Beautifully realised and superbly engineered, the Range Rover SV Coupé delivers the most distinguished, luxurious and exclusive Range Rover ever built.”

Gerry McGovern
Chief Design Officer, Land Rover

Beautiful proportions with a powerful stance give SV Coupé unrivalled on-road presence. The signature floating roof, continuous waist and tapering tail are instantly recognisable Range Rover DNA, yet are expressed in a unique way for this exclusive addition to the Range Rover family.

SV Coupé’s purity of line is perfectly complemented by elegant power-close doors with frameless glass. In combination with the panoramic roof, light floods into the cabin, accentuating the relaxed, sophisticated and contemporary ambience.

Carefully curated body colour combinations, including a new Contour Graphic available in four duo-tone colourways, are offset by unique side vent and grille designs. This is also the first Range Rover with a 23-inch wheel option.

Enhanced luxury and exquisite craftsmanship extends inside too, with semi-aniline leather front seats bringing Range Rover’s already premium interior to a new level of luxury: accommodation comparable to private jets and yachts. Their gradated diamond quilt design is unique to SV Coupé.

Each SV Coupé will be hand-assembled to the client’s personal specification by the fastidious experts at the SVO Technical Centre in the UK – a first for Range Rover.

SV Coupé clients can choose from four front-to-rear contrast interior colourways, or a range of single-tone interior colours. Both are complemented by a choice of three elegant wood veneers. A first for Range Rover is Nautica, which carefully balances heritage craftsmanship with new technology, fusing walnut and sycamore.

“The introduction of the new SV Coupé brings a new level of individual expression to the Range Rover portfolio and builds on the success of Special Vehicle Operations’ existing bespoke Range Rover programme. Feedback from SV clients who have already seen the vehicle in confidential commissioning sessions has been overwhelmingly positive.”

John Edwards
Land Rover Special Operations Managing Director

Optional paint finishes include Liquesence, which brings a sensational liquid metal finish to Range Rover for the first time.

Additionally, Special Vehicle Operations’ bespoke personalisation team offers SV Coupé clients the opportunity to indulge their desire to create a unique vehicle to their exacting taste, granting access to 100 more paint colours, plus unique ‘match to sample’ hues, with a range of finishes; duo-tone front and rear leather colours with a bespoke quilt pattern; contrast stitching; headrest embroidery; doorhandle and treadplate engraving and semi-precious metal badging.

SV Coupé is also the fastest-ever full-size Range Rover, with a 165mph top speed. Powered by an exhilarating 565PS 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 petrol powertrain, the most powerful ever placed in a full-size Range Rover, means SV Coupé hits 60mph in just 5 seconds.

“As you’d expect from Range Rover, the engineering integrity in SV Coupé is more than skin-deep. This is a meticulously honed vehicle that’s designed for SV clients who love driving.”

Mark Stanton
Special Vehicle Operations Director

The suspension is tuned to provide a more driver-focused edge than the standard Range Rover, with a ride height lowered by 8mm, but will remain composed and comfortable at all times. Plus, the SV Coupé loses none of Range Rover’s legendary all-terrain ability, with 900mm maximum wading depth – and a maximum towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes.

Range Rover SV Coupé sales are anticipated to start from the fourth quarter of 2018, priced from £240,000 in the UK.
