The SF90 isn’t just beautiful - it’s also a very efficient air-cutting machine

Ferrari is giving us a guided digital tour of the SF90 Spider with valuable inputs from Flavio Manzoni, the company’s design chief who has signed his name on the likes of F12 Berlinetta, 812 Superfast, and Monza SP1 and SP2.

Those familiar with Ferrari’s style of doing business know discretion is one of the company’s traits. That’s why seeing Maranello’s designers go out in the open to talk about why and how they implemented a particular element into a car’s looks is a once-in-a-blue-moon affair.

This time around, we actually get a treat from Flavio Manzoni, Ferrari’s own design boss, who takes a closer look at the SF90 Spider, the open top version of the SF90 Stradale plug-in hybrid.

Just like its fixed-roof sibling, the SF90 Spider is animated by a 769-horsepower turbocharged V-8 that teams up with three electric motors (one one the front axle and the other two on the rear axle) to produce 986 horsepower.

On-paper performance numbers are staggering to say the least: 0-100 kph (62 mph) takes 2.5 seconds and 0-200 kph (124 mph) happens in seven seconds flat. And if you’re willing to touch on the aero side of things, the SF90 generates as much as 390 kilos (860 pounds) of downforce at 250 kph (155 mph). Then comes the actual looks of the car because being a Ferrari, the SF90 has to be just as beautiful as it is fast.

This is where Flavio Manzoni enters the stage to show us just how harmoniously the SF90 mixes form and function when it comes to design. And although it’s not too long or detailed, the video below will teach you how Ferrari optimized air flow around and underneath the SF90 and cranked up its head-turning abilities in one single package.

Tudor’s first encounter with cars took place when he was only a child. Back then, his father brought home a Trabant 601 Kombi and a few years later, a Wartburg 353. At that time, he was too young to know how they worked and way too young to drive them, but he could see one thing – each of them had a different ethos and their own unique personality. As time went on, he started seeing that in other cars as well, and his love for the automobile was born.  Read full bio
