Even today, when technology is easily copied, Volvo is still considered to be at the forefront of safety. The Swedish manufacturer is also one of the first brands to adopt electrification, and this now extends to their truck models. With that said, Volvo Trucks proudly introduces the FH Electric. Given the focus on electrification, this is the natural progression of the Volvo FH, which in 2014, was the first truck to receive Volvo’s I-Shift, dual-clutch automatic (with optional crawler gears from 2016). Now, this electric version is ready to rock and roll in silence (not literally roll) and legendary drummer, Mikkey Dee gets behind the wheel to share his impressions.

Inviting celebrities to present new products is not uncommon for vehicle manufacturers. The drummer known from Motörhead and Scorpions has had a truck driver’s license since 1981 and Volvo decided to let him drive their latest addition to the truck lineup. The Volvo FH Electric is the first all-electric semi-truck. A two-motor and tri-motor variant will be offered, with a power output of 330 to 490 kilowatts (450 to 666 horsepower). Peak torque is rated at 1,770 pound-feet (2,400 Nm). Power is distributed to all six wheels through an I-Shift dual-clutch automatic transmission, which has been modified for EV applications.

Between two and six battery packs will be available with a capacity of 180 to 540 kWh. AC charging requires 9.5 hours at 43 kW for a full charge while DC charging at 250 kW takes 2.5 hours. Volvo’s EV truck is capable of up to 186 miles (300 km) with a trailer and a gross combination weight of 44 tons (97,003 pounds).

Being an all-electric truck, the Volvo FH Electric provides a much more quiet driving experience, compared to ICE-powered trucks. Even a legendary drummer like Mikkey Dee is enjoying the quietness of the electric Volvo truck. It goes without saying that the Volvo FH Electric provides all amenities for long-distance hauls, including a sleeping bed for the driver. Volvo’s electric truck comes with Volvo Gold Service Contract, which includes battery monitoring and predictive service planning ensuring secure uptime and deliveries.

If you have driven any kind of an all-electric vehicle you would know, but Volvo’s driving coach, Tatu Ljokkoi explains that the responsiveness of the electric powertrain is second to none even when applied to a much larger vehicle like the Volvo FH Electric. Apparently, it is enough to impress even a “motor fanatic” like the rockstar Mikkey Dee who takes the electric truck for a spirited drive on some winding roads, as the video below demonstrates.
