Cars ranging from the Bentley Continental to the Nissan Sentra have been receiving the typical treatment of blacking out all the trim pieces to help add that little extra flair of sinisterness.

We get why they are making this choice, It makes them money, and it can make their models look ever-so-slightly cooler. But if everyone does it, does it not lose its sparkle? Surely, if blacked-out cars are everywhere, then they cannot be cool forever, right? Well, Lincoln must disagree as they are the latest to add the basic black-trim package to the list of options, only this time it is called the "Jet Appearance Package."

So, what are the details about this package?

Of course, the whole thing is totally cosmetic. The changes consist of a black grille, black skull caps, black roof rails, black paint applied to the lower front facia, as well as a set of 22-inch wheels painted what else but black. Lincoln does take the liberty of painting the plastic body cladding and wheel lip moldings the same color as the rest of the body.

The package is only available on the Reserve trim of the Aviator and will not be offered until early 2022. But, when it is offered, it will only be available in a handful of colors; Pristine White, Infinite Black, Silver Radiance, and Burgundy Velvet.

“Jet Package offers a clean, dramatic look that accentuates the presence of Aviator on the road,” said Earl Lucas, Lincoln exterior chief designer. “The black accents emphasize the strong lines and sleek look of the exterior design.”

Lincoln is playing the exact price close to the vest, but expect the Jet package to cost $2,000, but probably not any more than that, as the Monochromatic package costs about the same. Mind you, that is on top of the $58,450 starting price for a Reserve level Aviator.

Wait, I forgot Lincoln existed. How does the Aviator stack up to the competition?

Well, it does have some stiff competition from equally luxurious brands. Most notably, the Genesis GV80, which starts at $49,495. However, the Germans and Swedes are not giving up just yet. The BMW X5 starts at $60,395, the Audi Q7 starts at $56,895, the Mercedes GLE starts at $56,750, and the Volvo XC90 starts at $50,995. All this compared to the base Aviator's starting price of $52,560 (all of these include the additional destination and delivery fees).

It is hard to see why one would pick the Aviator over the competition. We are familiar with Genesis's ability to make something of a world-beater, albeit one that flies under the radar, not to mention the price point.

The Volvo is also cheaper and has some stunning design both inside and out. The Audi has a fantastic interior and has one of the best infotainment systems on the market. The Mercedes has all the clout, and the BMW will probably drive better than the Aviator.

To put Lincoln back up to the forefront of the luxury car game, they are going to have to do more than just give us some new trim pieces.
