Jaguar is reportedly considering a move that would turn it into a brand that only builds and sells electric vehicles within the next ten years. It’s even been reported that, during this time, the brand will slowly phase out internal combustion engines.

Nothing is final or certain, just a report from Autocar, but the automaker already sells an all-electric crossover, in the form of the new I-Pace, which caused quite a stir since it was launched, and it’s also been suggested its next XJ flagship sedan may be an electric-only affair.

In fact, it is this all-electric next-gen XJ shows what the thinking within the company is - their top of the range model won’t be offered with a gasoline-burning engine, despite the decades of tradition behind it.

With it, Jaguar wants to get the jump on the competition and take the fight straight to the Tesla Model S and upcoming Porsche Taycan - the fact that the current XJ, a rival to traditional large luxury sedans, isn’t selling too well may also have been factored into the decision.

The current XE and XF models will stay in the range until around 2023, and the F-Type sports car won’t survive much later. The XE will probably be replaced first, as we’ve already seen Jaguar testing the facelift model, then the XF. And, since Jaguar has announced no plans to replace the F-Type, an all-electric replacement for it could be in the cards.

By 2026, only the yet-to-be-launched J-Pace large SUV (a future rival to the Porsche Cayenne) will still be offered with an internal combustion powertrain, albeit not until 2027, according to the source.

Jaguar is already pursuing electrification not only for the I-Pace fully-electric crossover but its core range as well.

The revised XE will gain a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and the XF will also get it as part of its refresh (both cars were launched in the same year). The F-Pace SUV, which shares its underpinnings with the two sedans will probably also use the same form of electrification after its own refresh.
