The 2008 SAE World Congress will reveal for it’s visitors the new diesel- electric hybrid version of the Scorpio SUV. The announcement was made today by Mahindra&Mahindra, one of the leading automakers in the Indian market, which developed the diesel hybrid version with support from FEV, a leading producer of advanced powertrain and vehicles technologies.

"The Scorpio vehicle is a clear indicator of the enormous implications of globalization on the changing paradigm in vehicle development. A rapid advancement of technology is occurring on a global scale, and our OEM customers are increasingly leveraging FEV’s global presence to ensure around- the-clock development of new powertrain and vehicle concepts”, said Mr. Gary Rogers, president and CEO of FEV.

The Mahindra Scorpio hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is the first of this kind to be marketed in the Asian market and FEV contributed its expertise in hybrid powertrain systems development and integration to support Mahindra in the hybridization of the vehicle."FEV has been a very receptive and experienced partner in the program and is known for their HEV work across the globe. With their support, we were able to meet our aggressive targets," said Dr. Arun Jaura, Chief Technology officer, Mahindra Group.

Here are some of the most important features of HEV: start- stop technology, a 2.2L, I-4 second generation diesel common rail engine with 85kW and 270Nm ratings, 6- speed automatic transmission, 30kW(peak) motor with max torque of 270 Nm and max speed of 8500 rpm, a 288V- 8.4 Ah NiMH battery and quick cold start with e-motor assist.

The Mahindra Scorpio is similar to a Range rover or Jeep design. This model won three prestigious awards such as the Car of the Year, Best SUV of the Year and the "Best Car of the Year.
