Mazda has introduced a new SUV to its lineup called the CX-50. Rumored to replace the CX-5 in the automaker’s lineup, the CX-50 will actually coexist with the former and try to bring in big numbers for Mazda together. The CX-50 is brought in to boost Mazda’s sales in the U.S. as the company aims to move 150,000 examples of it every year. Not a whole lot of details are revealed, but from what we know so far, it will be the jack of all trades.

What’s Special About The Mazda CX-50?

Mazda cars are known for their understated, minimalist looks. The Kodo design language that they follow is focused on making the models look classy and not loud. The CX-50 is a slight exception, though. It is a little more jacked up than the CX-5, but that’s not a bad thing. The automaker has noted that the SUV is ‘geared toward outdoor ruggedness’.

The CX-50 comes with a blacked-out grille, black wheel cladding, and other decals on the body that make the SUV look even more chiseled. To go with the outdoor ruggedness theme, Mazda has opted for high-strength roof rails and reinforced b-pillars and door jambs to make the roof rack usable. We are yet to get the specs and dimensions of the CX-50, but it seems to ride on 18-inch wheels. The SUV will be offered in a new color called the Zircon Sand, which looks pretty good and gels well with all the black elements on the body.

It is simple and classy on the inside as well. Folks looking for a lot of pizzazz will be disappointed. The seats and door panels are draped in Terracota colored upholstery. There’s a panoramic sunroof on offer, too. As mentioned earlier, we’re yet to get a whole list of specs and features.

The CX-50 will be powered by the Skyactiv-G 2.5-liter engine. Just like the CX-5, this engine will be offered in a naturally aspirated form and with a turbocharger. Power outputs are not revealed, but we expect the same tuning as the CX-5 here.

Being sold as a mild off-roader, the CX-50 will come with the i-Activ All-Wheel Drive system as standard. Power will be routed to the wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox. Mazda will add a hybrid powertrain to it and also fully electrify it in the future. The details about these options are scarce, but we should hear more in due time.

There’s no word on the trims levels or the pricing yet. We speculate the pricing to be a tad bit higher than the CX-5’s. The CX-5 starts at $25,370 and goes all the way up to $37,505. However, there are seven trims on offer. The CX-50, we feel, will be lighter on this front, which will allow the company to price is a little higher.

Conclusion

The CX-50 will be the first Mazda built at the new Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Alabama. The automaker mentioned that the CX-50’s production will begin in January 2022. The deliveries should begin soon after.
