Transfagarasan – one of the most beautiful mountain passes in the world. It's rated as one of the best road trip by Top Gear and was recently featured in a Lamborghini commercial. Now, Mazda has gotten in on the action by showcasing the Mazda MX-5 RF on the famous road. This video only runs about 2.5 minutes, which means you actually get to see very little of the 56-mile mountain pass, but it’s still a sight to see, whether you’re a fan of the MX-5 or the gorgeous scenery afforded by these grand mountains in Romania.

Unfortunately, we don’t get to see the MX-5 actually put in work. For the most part, it is driving slow and creeping along as most people usually do. Most of me just wants to scream “punch it” already. I mean, after all, this would be a fun road to go all fast and furious on, don’t you think? Maybe do a little drifting? Well, at least when the road is empty like in the video. Anyway, keep reading to learn a little more about the road and check out Mazda’s latest video.

Outside of the Transalpina, the Transfagarasan is the highest paved road in the country of Romania. It stretches nearly 56 miles and is one of the most scenic drives you can take. It was built back in the 1970s as a military route for easy mountain passing after the Soviet Union invaded Czechoslovakia in 1968. The road was officially opened on September 20, 1974, but paving work would continue on for at least another six years. The highest point of the road reaches 2,042 meters or just shy of 6,700 feet. It’s a winding ribbon with steep turns and is usually closed down for about half of the year due to excessive snow. While it looks like a fun road for some spirited driving, average speeds are actually quite slow, sitting around 25 mph. That makes this 56-mile pass at least a two-hour journey in most cases.

So, tell us – if you had had the chance to drive this road in the MX-5 RF with nobody else around, would you bury the throttle or just creep along and enjoy the scenery? Let us know in the comments below.
