Regardless of whether or not you say 30, the 50, or the 60, when we hear the words "Mazda CX" we automatically think about a crossover/SUV. In fact, "C" stands for crossover concept and "X" means sports car. In the near future, the CX lineup will see the addition of three new models: 70, 80, and 90 - all planned to go on sale in 2023.

But what if Mazda will use the CX-60 nomenclature for a new, two-door sports coupe? Instagramer Andras.veres imagined such a car and he even offers an explanation for the name we opted for.

This possible future CX-60 has nothing in common with the current CX-60 SUV. In fact, it reminds us more of the old RX-8 than it does of the SUV. So, what does CX-60 stand for in this case? "C" means coupe, "X" is short for ‘Skyactiv-X’ powertrain, "6" - is the displacement of the engine - a 6.0-liter, while "0" means atmospheric. As such, we can only imagine that the sports car will deliver a lot more power than the current CX-60 SUV. The latter is powered by a 192-horsepower, naturally aspirated e-Skyactive 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine matted to a 100-kW electric motor that produces 136 horsepower. The system delivers a total of 323 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, making the CX-60, the most powerful production Mazda ever. Well, things will change if Mazda ever builds a car like this imagined CX-60 sports coupe. Its 6.0-liter engine should deliver at least 1,000 horsepower – putting it right in line with the world’s most powerful supercars.

whether it's this cool looking supercar, or the long-rumored return of the RX-8, Mazda really needs a new proper sports car in its lineup. The last one was offered back in 2012 when the company ceased production of the rotary RX-8. After that, all we heard were all kind of crazy rumors about possible comebacks and new additions to the lineup, but it turns out Mazda decided to focus its attention on what the market asks for: crossovers and SUVs. The new sports car - rumored to be called RX-9 has been in and out of the spotlight so many times we lost count. The latest report suggests it could be offered with an all-new AWD powertrain that will spark the long-awaited return of the rotary engine. This new system should combine an internal combustion engine, with a pair of electric hub motors up front and a small 3.5-kWh battery pack. Mazda filed this new patent in Japan back in 2020 and gave us a lot of hope.
