The highly-anticipated BP23, McLaren's upcoming hypercar and successor to the P1, will be called the Speedtail, the British firm announced today. Known as the BP23 up until now, the upcoming member of the Ultimate Series line will be the "world's first Hyper-GT," and McLaren claims it will be its fastest vehicle yet - so fact that it will exceed the F1's 243-mph top speed.

The British carmaker also released a new teaser photo, which shows a sketch of the Speedtail's profile. While there are no details to talk about, it seems that the supercar will be highly streamlined and will have a tall rear section. Interestingly enough, it doesn't have a wing, although it will probably have a retractable spoiler fitted into the decklid.

McLaren also unveiled that it will have "exquisite new materials to facilitate limitless possibilities for tailoring through McLaren Special Operations." It will also be the most luxurious McLaren and will deliver an "unparalleled blend of extreme performance and sporting luxury." The Brits reconfirmed that the three-seat cockpit layout with a central driving position, inspired by the iconic F1, as well as a gasoline-electric hybrid drivetrain.

As far as the name goes, McLaren says it was selected for the car's highly streamlined design and record-breaking top speed. The Speedtail will be unveiled by the end of 2018, with customers to get a preview before the supercar makes its public debut. Only 106 will be produced, and all of them have already sold for £1.6 million (about 2.1 million as of July 2017) before options.
