McLaren has just unveiled the 600LT as the quickest, most powerful iteration of the Sports Series that's still legal for public road use, and word has it the British want to take things up a notch.

According to Australia's Motoring, McLaren is pondering a more extreme version of the 600LT that would be even closer to the race-spec 570S GT4. The outlet also speculates that the car could be called the 600 GT4. The news was unveiled by McLaren chief engineer Paul Burnham at a preview of the 600LT in London in June.

"It’s amazing how usable the 600LT is on the road. Sure, it’s a little louder but it still rides well, which got us thinking we should make an even faster version," said Burnham. "We want it to happen and I’m lobbying hard for it," he added.

The beefed-up 600LT will be even lighter thanks to a full carbon-fiber body, with weight rumors to be "considerably less than 1,200 kg," which converts to around 2,645 pounds. The 600LT tips the scales at an already amazing 2,749 pounds. In addition, it will get upgraded aerodynamics and a bigger rear wing. The V-8 engine will also get a power bump from the 600LT's 592 horsepower to almost 670 horses.

That's supercar power right there, but it remains to be seen if this 600 GT4 plan comes to fruition. McLaren has yet to offer a more hardcore model above the Longtail in the Super Series range and it seems a bit strange that it will start doing so with the Sports Series lineup. Especially since the 600 GT4 would crank out about as much power as the 675LT. On the other hand, anything can happen in today's market and a more extreme 600LT sounds like a cool idea.
