The former Formula One racecar builder and makers of the famed McLaren F1 super car recently revealed the MP4-12C, a two passenger super car that will provide the performance of a Ferrari, the style of a Lamborghini and the desirability of an Aston Martin while maintaining a much more reasonable cost. Aside from the fixed roof version, McLaren automotive has also announced that they will also be coming out with an open air spider version as well. This image you see above is the first rendering of the drop top McLaren MP4-12C that is to be unveiled as a production vehicle sometime in the next two to three years. When it finally does come to fruition, the MP4 spider will compete head to head with other high end exotics like the Ferrari 458 Italia Spider, Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder and the forthcoming Mercedes SLS AMG Cabriolet.

The McLaren MP4-12C will be powered by the same twin turbocharged 3.8 Liter V8 and seven speed Seamless Shift dual clutch gearbox (SSG). An interesting fact about the super car power train is that the boosted eight cylinder engine offers the highest horsepower to CO2 ratio of any internal combustion car on the road today, including hybrids. The piston pumping V8 produces around 600 HP and 433 lb-ft of torque and will allow the future McLaren spider to sprint from 0 to 60 MPH in less than 3.5 seconds and reach a top speed in excess of 200 MPH.

It will never be as great as the F1 because of the newer safety/emission regulations.

This should better be a good car. Since McLaren have already made a poor start to the 2009 season, with Kovalainen failing to finish either of the opening two races.

It’s going to be a tough fight for McLaren MP4-12C. But if it can really sprint from 0 to 60 MPH in less than 3.5 seconds, then it might be something.

@Tkf1 Well, it’s not all about the looks. And it’s not all about the performance either. It should be both. I’d still go for the Porsche 911.

The McLaren was once the famed supercar makers. But since their decline in the 1970s and 1990s, I don’t think they have ever regained that status. But who knows, the spec of the car is pretty impressing. They might be able to get attention this time.

You guys are just on about the aesthetics, McLaren is for people who can look through the pretty body panels and shapes and see an incredible piece of engineering, a fantastic design and maybe also for people who want a high performance car but dont want youre run-of-the-mill ferrari or lambo.

This car is going to be awesome, and it will out perform and out drive all its rivals im sure.

I dont know if the line about price is accurate though, im sure i heard its supposed to cost around £170,000.

Or the part suggesting it has the same engine as the SLS, i know thats not true cause the McLaren engine has been developed in house without Mercedes and built in England.

I don’t know but 0 to 60 MPH in less than 3.5 seconds is pretty impressing. These are the days when you don’t care if they are simply copying one style after the other.

I wonder what they are planning to come up to this time? McLaren has nothing but combinations of car features from supercars. We need something fresh.

A Spider? Come on, McLaren. Save weight, save money, and maintain more rigidity by making it a targa.
