Launched about a couple of years ago, the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG is about to receive a facelift for the 2016 model year. The hot-hatch->ke304 was spotted testing somewhere in Germany recently, a hint that it might make its public debut by the end of 2015.

Much like the facelifted A-Class,->ke452 the new A45 AMG will have only minor changes. Although not yet visible on this prototype, it should receive a new bumpers, revised headlamp and taillight clusters, and bigger front intakes. All told, the facelift will be as aggressive as its predecessor on the outside. Inside the cabin, changes will likely be limited to a revised instrument cluster, updated tech, and maybe a slightly rearranged center console layout.

More important modifications should take place under the hood. Word has it AMG->ke8 will not only update the current 2.0-liter four-pot, but launch an S model as well. While the standard model might get bumped to as much as 375 horsepower, 20 horses more than the current car, the A45 AMG S could deliver some 400 horsepower, which would be enough to make Volkswagen's upcoming Golf R400 feel uncomfortable.

With the A-Class set to break cover at the Frankfurt Motor Show->ke235 in September, I expect the A45 AMG to arrive sometime in the fourth quarter of the year. There's no word as to whether Mercedes->ke187 will finally bring it to the U.S. or not. You'd better keep them fingers crossed.

Why it matters

Although it won't do much to alter the A45's styling, AMG will definitely up the ante in the drivetrain department. The hot-hatch market is tougher than it ever was, and with the crazy Golf R400 right around the corner, the A45 AMG needs to defend its position as the most powerful hatch in dealerships. The only downside of this aggressive-looking and stupid-fast hatch is that it might not make it Stateside.
