The Mercedes-AMG Project One is the right kind of spicy for hypercar-starved fans the world over. But as much as we know about it already, we really don’t know a lot about it from Mercedes-AMG’s perspective. Good thing then that AMG boss Tobias Moers revealed some interesting information about the Project One, including its weight, power estimate, and the amount of downforce it will generate. None of these numbers are official, but if it comes from the man making all the decisions, we’ll take it as the closest thing to gospel.

The first thing Tobias Moers touched on in his conversation with Autocar was the amount of downforce the Project One will generate. In his words, that figure will be “approximately half the weight of the car.” He also confirmed that the hypercar will weigh around 1,300 to 1,400 kilos (2,866 to 3,086 pounds), slightly heavier than the 1,200-kilo (2,645 pounds) weight that’s been reported in the past.

If those figures hold, the Project One will be able to produce approximately 675 kilos of downforce, well short of the McLaren Senna, which Mclaren claims will generate 800 kilos of downforce. The numbers for the Project One are still impressive considering that it doesn’t have as prominent an active rear spoiler as the one the Senna has at its disposal. There’s also the question of at what that downforce figure comes into play. In the Senna, McLaren claims that it can achieve 800 kilos of downforce when it reaches 155 mph. It’s worth noting, too, that the Project One, like the Senna, is capable of lowering its ride height for track purposes, opening the door for an increase in the amount of downforce it generates under it.

This feature will also play into the hypercar’s output. We’ve known for quite a while that the Project One will have around 1,000 horsepower at its disposal. Moers, though, made it clear that the stated output is just what the car has at this stage of its development. Its actual output, in Moers’ words, will be 1,000 horsepower “plus, plus, plus.” Don’t get too excited yet because the AMG boss also pulled the reins by saying that he expects the final output to sit below 1,100 horsepower. Either way, that’s still a lot of horses to play around with.

For now, Mercedes-AMG is sticking with its 2019 production schedule. That should be enough time to work on the finer details of the hypercar, including its ability to post record-setting laps when it’s unleashed into the world. According to Autocar, AMG studied past lap records in the Nurburgring during the development of the Project One including the outright record Stefan Bellof set in a Porsche 956 back in 1983. Is it possible then that Mercedes-AMG thinks it can beat that number? It’s hard to imagine the hypercar breaking it because doing so would mean that it would be almost 40 seconds Autocar than the Porsche 911 GT2 RS, the raging monster that holds the production car record with a lap time of 6:47.

But who’s to say that it can or can’t? Only time will tell.
