Remember that rumor from October 2020 that Mercedes might have set a new Nurburgring lap record with the AMG GT Black Series? Well, it's been almost a month since then and the German company finally released the car's Nordschleife run on video.

And it's true, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is now the quickest production car on the Green Hell. The Black Series was driven by GT3 pilot Maro Engel to a new record of 6:43.616 minutes, more than a second quicker than the previous benchmark.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series broke a two-year-old record

Exactly 1.36 seconds quicker than the previous record holder, the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ, the AMG GT Black Series is now the quickest road-legal production car on the famous German track}. The benchmark was set on November 4, which means that Engel broke a record that was a little more than two years and three months old.

Engel also broke his previous record by a large margin. Back in November 2018, he lapped the 'Ring in 7:04.632 minutes with the Mercedes-AMG GT R Pro. He was now faster by a whopping 21 seconds.

The new benchmark with the AMG GT Black Series is also impressively quicker than laps set with pure-bred sports cars and even supercars. It's almost four seconds faster than the Porsche 911 GT2 RS and five seconds quicker than the Radical SR8 LM. The German coupe also crossed the finish line almost 13 seconds quicker than the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and more than 13 seconds faster than the Porsche 918 Spyder. This speaks volumes of how fast the Black Series model is on the race track.

The record comes with a full video of the run and with an official and precise measuring by Wige Solutions. An independent notary also certified the record and the condition and setup of the car, which ensures that the benchmark can't be disputed like it happened with SSC Tuatara's top speed record in October 2020}.

The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series was faster than the AMG GT3 race car!

As incredible as it may sound, the AMG GT Black Series was faster than the company's AMG GT3 race car. And this isn't a PR stunt, it comes straight from Maro Engel, who has been racing the AMG GT3 since 2017.

"With speeds of up to almost 168 mph in the Kesselchen section of the track and well over 186 mph on the long Döttinger Höhe straight, the AMG GT Black Series is significantly faster than my GT3 race car. To finally drive around the Nordschleife in 6:48.047 minutes (for the 12.944-mile total track) with a production road car in these track conditions is really awesome. Like my GT3 race car, the AMG GT Black Series offers a lot of adjustment possibilities, all of which enabled me to create a setup that was tailor-made for me," said Engel.

Mercedes-Benz also revealed the setup in which the AMG GT Black Series was driven on the 'Ring for the record run. The front splitter was extended to "Race" position, while the lower and upper wing blades of the rear spoiler were each adjusted to the middle position. The adjustable coilover suspension with adaptive damping was lowered by 0.2 inches in the front and 0.1 inches in the rear. The camber was adjusted to the maximum possible values of negative 3.8 degrees at the front axle and negative 3.0 degrees at the rear axles.

Engel opted for the hardest setting of the anti-roll bars and adjusted the nine-stage AMG traction control between positions six and seven depending on the section of the track. All these adjustments can be performed on the production AMG GT Black Series model you can find at Mercedes dealers.
