Mercedes-AMG’s Black Series Moniker has been traditionally reserved for two-door cars, and Tobias Moers – the man in charge of AMG – has finally admitted that there will be no SUV bearing the Black Series name. Praise the Lord and pass the biscuits, we say, but with that in mind, there’s also some bad news as well. Now that the AMG GT is here to reign supreme, AMG won’t be making another Black Series edition of the C63 Coupe either.

Mercedes-AMG Black Series: What Comes Next?

While Jaguar Land Rover is busy talking about a track-prepped SUV to dominate the Nurburgring, Mercedes-AMG wants nothing to do with that drama. Autoguide caught up with him at the 2018 New York Auto show and, when asked about a Black Series SUV, his words couldn’t have been clearer: “No, no, no, no… never. Black Series is for the racetrack.” He continued, “Black Series is dedicated to two-door cars. And, you know with the GT lineup, there’s no sense of a C-Class Coupe Black Series.”

Of course, once you hear that last line from the man in charge of AMG, you can’t help but ask about an AMG GT Black Series. And, that’s exactly what happened. Moers didn’t exactly confirm that it will happen, but he didn’t deny it either, saying “GT S Roadster is coming to the market now, and you know, we have in the past something called Black Series, so let’s wait and see.”

Yeah, let’s wait and see. We pretty much know that it’s coming, but the question is; what will it bring to the table? In typical fashion, it should be lighter and have some serious aerodynamic enhancements to improve downforce compared to the range-topping AMG GT. It’ll be designed specifically for the track, so you can expect sticker tires, advanced suspension, stiffer chassis, track-bred gear inside, and ultimately, lower lap times. And, in case there is still some doubt in your mind, we’ve seen it testing on the Nurburgring in the past, so Mercedes-AMG is well on its way.

Will we see it this year? Well, that remains to be seen, but it’s not exactly out of the question. If we don’t see it in the second half of this year, we’ll undoubtedly see it in the first quarter of 2019. Until then, keep hoping and dreaming, folks – at least we can sleep better knowing that Mercedes won’t taint the Black Series legacy by plastering the name on an SUV, right?
