When Mercedes announced the Vision EQXX back in January 2022 it boasted a range of 620 miles. People were of course skeptical, so the car had to prove itself - something it did in April 2022 when it completed a 1,008-kilometer (626 miles) road trip across European highways on a single charge. And, if you need more proof that the Vision EQXX is a very efficient car, Mercedes has just announced the concept broke its own record with another trip of 1,202 kilometers.

While during its first trip the Vision EQXX traveled from Stuttgart to Cassis, France, this time it went from Stuttgart to Silverstone, UK. If you are wondering how was it possible to add another 200 kilometers (124 miles) to its range, the reason is not easy driving. In fact, the concept achieved an average speed of 83 km/h, with a maximum speed of 140 km/h hit during the 11 laps it took at the Silverstone racetrack. Even the air conditioning was operational for just over eight out of the 14 hours and 30 minutes of driving time. Not even the temperature helped - it went up to 30 degrees Celsius - nor did the congested traffic around Stuttgart and in the southeast of England. During the trip, the Vision EQXX achieved an average consumption of 8.3 kWh/100 km. As a reminder, during the first trip the temperature ranged from 8 to 18 degrees Celsius, and the energy consumption was 8.7 kWh/100 km.

Responsible for this amazing efficiency is the concept's innovative thermal management system. It works in tandem with aero-shutters, coolant valves, and pumps and ensures that the electric drive unit maintains the most efficient temperature balance at minimum energy cost. The system has innovative air-flow management and a cooling plate installed in the vehicle floor. This way the cooling is done by the air flowing along the underside of the Vision EQXX and allows an increase in range of around two percent in the most aerodynamic mode.

The Vision EQXX has a 100-kWh battery similar to the one that powers the Mercedes-Benz EQS. However, in the concept, the battery is 50-percent smaller and 30-percent lighter. Also, 95-percent of energy from the battery ends up at the wheels - part of the reason why the range is so high. Also, the concept benefits from 117 solar cells placed on the roof that can add up to 15 miles of range on long-distance journeys.

Mercedes-Benz plans to go all-electric by 2030 and while the Vision EQXX is just a concept, its technologies will be used in future production models. In fact, the company said that "it is important to show to the world what can be achieved in real terms through a combination of cutting-edge technology, teamwork, and determination."
