Mercedes will unveil at the Frankfurt Motor Show the F700 Concept, a radical luxury-car powered by the innovative DiesOtto engine.

The DiesOtto engine is a turbocharged 1.8-litre, four-cylinder unit that combines diesel-style automatic ignition with a conventional petrol spark plug system on start-up and under heavy accelerative demands. The maximum power is 235 hp and the fuel consumption is around 40 mpg.

Mercedes previously reported that the DiesOtto engine is suitable for use in the S-Class, so we consider that the F700 is a preview for the next generation luxury saloon.

Mercedes will also present 18 new models and concepts at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month; these will include the new C-Class estate, models with the new Bluetec diesel engines, and both diesel- and petrol-electric hybrids.

I’m eager to see the technology behind this. Torque figures would also be nice, to see if the relatively low hp rating is backed up by diesel-like strong twisting.
