Mercedes-AMG wasn’t going to let BMW’s freshly-revamped M5 take all the limelight so it counter-attacked with the unveil of the revised E 63 S 4MATIC+, in both sedan and wagon flavors. Here’s what changes for the uber E-Class.

Same performance, updated looks, and extra tech

After all, the 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque cranked out by the hand-assembled 4.0-liter biturbo V-8 would have been deemed as supercar-grade 10 or 20 years ago.

That said, the E 63 can still blaze from 0 to 60 mph in 3.3 seconds (the wagon is 0.1 seconds slower, not that you’d be able to tell in real life). Top speed is capped at 186 mph (180 mph for the wagon). Also on the powertrain front, the AMG Performance 4MATIC+ with Drift Mode remains unchanged, as is the case for the slick-shifting AMG Speedshift MCT 9G nine-speed automatic transmission.

Visually, the tweaked E 63 range gets the new LED DRL eyebrows Mercedes has been spreading throughout its lineup, redesigned taillights and a new rear bumper. And that’s pretty much it. A similar formula was given to the interior.

Other than a new steering wheel with touch-activated buttons that let you better interact with either of the 12.3-inch displays and Mercedes’ MBUX setup, not much is changed.

Tailoring the dynamic MO of the revamped E 63 is done via six pre-set modes, namely Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Individual, and RACE. We’d also pretty much like to know who takes their E 63 S Wagon to the race track.

If we were to take a look in BMW's backyard, the newly-revamped 2020 M5 makes do with a 4.4-liter V-8 with 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet. } 0-60 takes 3.2 seconds but the sprint can carry on to a top speed of 155 mph (unlocked to 190 mph with the M Driver’s Pack). The Competition model is even more astute: 617 horsepower and a wider torque band let it shoot from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds.

Then again, the M5 isn’t offered as a wagon, so those poised on making their kids puke the German way (while they’re never late for school) can either get the E 63 S Wagon, the Audi RS 6 Avant or the Porsche Panamera Turbo Sport Turismo.

We're still waiting on prices, but for the sake of the argument, the outgoing 2020 AMG E 63 S sedan starts at $107,350.
