Mercedes is looking to capture as much market share possible with the Maybach brand. While AMG is doing well on its own with performance cars, Maybach is still relying on Mercedes and building high-end versions of the S-Class sedan. However, Autocar reports that Maybach could soon revive itself as an independent brand that builds its own standalone vehicles - Much like AMG has gone with the GT lineup.

Maybach as a Standalone Company

AMG has made a name for itself within the Mercedes brand as the performance division that offers roadsters, GT coupes, and the soon-to-be-launched, AMG One hypercar. The brand, however, has yet to build a standalone production model of its own since its revival. Talking to Autocar, Daimler’s chief, Dieter Zetsche, said that the long-term plan is to have Maybach “stand on its own two feet, like AMG.” That means Maybach could, eventually, deliver something that isn't based on an existing Mercedes model.

We haven’t really seen much of Maybach’s independent cars lately, but the Vision Maybach 6 coupe and cabriolet, and the Vision Maybach Ultimate could be the starting ground.

One of Maybach’s models, the S-Class based limousine, has been a successful model in the marque’s lineup. Infact, the car finds itself comfortably sitting between the Audi A8 and the Bentley Flying Spur, or even the BMW 7 Series and Rolls Royce Ghost. With the new-found vigor, Maybach will want to take the fight to the top British marques with some new top-of-the-line models as well. Until that is accomplished, Maybach will be producing super-luxurious versions of top Mercedes models like the S-Class, the upcoming new GLS, and maybe even the new G-Class.

What Can We Expect To See?

Compared to what Maybach used to sell previously, like the Maybach 57 and 62 limousines, these concepts are radically different. Mercedes does not want co-dependency with Maybach. Is Mercedes a little too ambitious to let Maybach wander on its own again? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, it looks like we'll find out soon enough. What do you think?
