Everyone loves an anniversary - they are a special time to remember where you came from. Car manufacturers especially love anniversaries because it gives them a chance to tell potential customers how long they've been on the block. 2022 happens to be the 55th anniversary of AMG, so Mercedes decided we needed another version of the GLE. SUVs and specifically crossovers have been a booming market for years now and every manufacturer is cashing in. The latest example of this from Mercedes AMG is the limited "Edition 55" version of the AMG GLE 53 and GLE 63 S Coupe.

What's So Special About the AMG "Edition 55"?

Available in traditional SUV and 'coupe' form, the GLE Edition 55 comes in either Obsidian Black Metallic or MANUFAKTUR Diamond White Metallic paint with 22-inch wheels finished in matte grey with wheel centers that say "Edition 55." All versions also come with the AMG Night Package fitted, which includes black window surrounds and black door mirrors. Other visual changes depend on what color your model is but all of them will get four chrome exhaust tips, tinted windows, and the chrome fuel filler cap that says AMG on it.

All GLE Edition 55s have red and black upholstery and floor mats, an embossed AMG logo on the center armrest, and the rest of the interior trimmed in carbon fiber. There is also an AMG steering wheel with "Edition 55" inserts as well as red illuminated AMG lettering on the door sills. Only 55 examples each will be made of the GLE 53, 53 Coupe, 63 S, and 63 S Coupe.

AMG Edition 55 Performance?

The Edition 55 treatment stops once you get under the hood. The GLE 53 and GLE 53 Coupe are both powered by a turbocharged, 3.0-liter straight-six that maxes out at 429 horsepower and 384 pound-feet of torque.

There is also an "EQ Boost" system that activates an electric motor which delivers an extra 21 horsepower and 184 pound-feet for short periods of time. So, temporarily, the 53 is capable of 450 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque. The more powerful configuration allows it to travel from 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds.

The GLE 63 S and GLE 63 S Coupe are fitted with the familiar twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 capable of 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. The 63 S also has an EQ Boost system that can deliver the same extra amount of horsepower and torque for a short time which will allow the 63 S to complete a 0-60 run in 3.7 seconds.

What is odd about the Edition 55 celebrating AMG's anniversary is that they are only available in the U.S., not Germany. Plus, AMG did not start making modified SUVs, they modified coupes and sedans. Perhaps an Edition 55 of the AMG C-Class or E-Class would have been more fitting as the next AMG C-Class will have a hybrid four-cylinder, and older generations of the E-Class are where AMG started, plus they are both sedans which are AMG's typical bread and butter.
