The beast returns with modern features. And an expensive price tag

While it failed as a brand as soon as it launched the H3, Hummer became an iconic brand with the H1. Produced by AM General from 1992 until 2006, the H1 is still regarded as one of the best off-road, military-based civilian vehicles ever built. 12 years have passed since it was discontinued, and the H1 returns as a restomod vehicle by Mil-Spec.

Mil-Spec Automotive just launched a revised version of the old Hummer H1 in June 2018

In case you’re not familiar with the brand, Mil-Spec Automotive just launched a revised version of the old Hummer H1 in June 2018. It’s called the Launch Edition 001 and features a hardened aerospace grade aluminum body, new bumpers, refurbished skid plates and LED lighting. It also received a leather interior, a premium audio system, and a beefed-up Duramax V-8 engine. One month later and Mil-Spec is working on the Launch Edition 002, which is the company’s first customer vehicle.

Unlike the first edition, which had a pickup bed, 002 has a slant rear section. It was also ordered in a triple-black paint scheme and requested with nearly all of the options available, including off-road lighting and Line-X covered body panels. We still don’t know how the actual vehicle looks like, but the company’s rendering suggests that Launch Edition 002 retains the H1’s ruggedness, while boasting a somewhat modern vibe.

#002 will be a triple black slant-back configuration. This vehicle is our first customer delivery and was spec-ed...

We also don’t know what engine will move this beast around, but the first model had a revised 6.6-liter Duramax V-8 diesel that generated 500 horsepower and a massive 1,000 pound-feet of torque. For reference, the H1’s original turbodiesel was rated at only 305 horses and 605 pound-feet. But Mil-Spec’s creation doesn’t necessarily have to be a diesel. Hummer also offered a 5.7-liter gasoline V-8 and other diesels, so it really depends on what the donor H1 came with.

While we don’t have too much information on this SUV, we do know that it will cost the owner a pretty penny. The Mil-Spec H1 starts at just under $219,000, and it’s safe to asume that an optioned-up model costs in excess of $250,000. That’s the kind of money that can buy you a Ferrari or a McLaren. But hey, I’m not judging. The H1 was impressive, but it was also a bit rugged for most people. Having the possibility to buy a modernized version with premium amenities is great news.
