Fashion designers have always had a strong partnership with automakers. With special-edition variants becoming more and more the rage these days, you won’t find a better person to create something that’s completely one-off than a famous fashion designer.

MINI’s special edition Lifeball vehicles have already been featured in these pages, but now it looks like the BMW-owned brand is prepared to release a number of new models, only this time, they’re releasing it with the help of some pretty heavyweight designers.

Among the new releases scheduled to be auctioned at the annual Life Ball AIDS research auction in Vienna, Austria will be a Kenneth Cole-designed MINI Convertible, a three-door hatch that was worked on by Diane von Furstenberg, and a MINI Countryman that was worked on by no less than Calvin Klein Creative Director Francisco Costa.

All things considered, special edition vehicles worked on by fashion designers will always considered as part of a different level than those penned by lesser names. And from the looks of things, these three heavyweights of the fashion industry more than lived up to the hype that will be forever attached to their names.

Don’t mean to be a curmudgeon, but how does advocating the singer of a song about promiscuity advance the cause of AIDS prevention?
