From auctions to car shows, parties to cruises, racing to meet-and-greets, Monterey Car Week has all the good stuff you’d expect from a world-class automotive event. Make no mistake – this isn’t some show and shine at the local fast food joint. This is the place where the finest machines on the planet get to romp amongst other high-dollar heroes, where supercars and antiques roll out for the shared enjoyment of scores of enthusiasts. Not that there’s anything wrong with a show and shine at the local fast food joint. Hell, I’ve been to more than my fair share of those. Rather, MCW takes things to a whole other dimension, creating a place where Ferraris and Lambos are almost as commonplace as Hondas and Toyotas. It’s in this environment that we can get an accurate reading on where the high-end automotive culture is currently sitting, and where it’s headed in the future.

We’re still more than week away from the kick-off gala at the Gordon McCall Motorworks Revival, but we’re already seeing some pretty interesting developments. For starters, Gordon McCall will host a variety of electric cars this year, including the Lucid Air and the Rimac Concept_One. While the traditional vintage aircraft and gas-burning supercars are also expected to show in abundance, the question is this – how quickly will the EV gain territory at events like Gordon McCall’s?

The auctions also raise an interesting question. All indications point towards a somewhat cooler collector car market following the record numbers we saw over the past few years. If we really are seeing a dip, it’ll be obvious when we get the final prices realized at the end of MCW.

And with so much of the car world changing so rapidly, how will the historic crowd react? Where will the crowds go for the Monterey Motorsports Reunion, and what will draw the eyes of the judges at the Concours d’Elegance? With big changes looming on the horizon, will the icons of the past become even more powerful?

Stay tuned as we ramp up our coverage of Monterey Car Week 2017.
