In the next three years BMW will add three new 4x4 models: the X6 crossover coupe previewed at this year’s Frankfurt motor show; a new small Sports Activity Vehicle called the X1, and the much-scooped Mini 4x4. The first to arrive will be the X6 sometime next year; followed by the Mini 4X4 in 2009 and the X1 in 2010.

The 2010 will be based on the 1-series hatchback. It will use the same mix of longitudinally mounted four- and six-cylinder petrol engines, and BMW’s four-pot diesel, both in turbocharged and twin-turbocharged form.

At BMW’s annual Press dinner BMW UK managing director Jim O’Donnell confirmed that the three new vehicles were part of the firm’s expansion plans. He also confirmed that the Concept CS Gran Turismo saloon will enter production within five years, as a new flagship for the brand.

The CS Gran Turismo will be above the next 7-series and will be powered by a range of V8 and V12 engines. Prices will start at £80,000. After 2012 BMW will also add the ‘V7’, or its Progressive Activity Sedan, a model placed below the CS Gran Turismo.
