News that Ford wanted to name its first electric SUV the Mustang Mach-E raised quite a few eyebrows and upset some hardcore Mustang fans, but it seemed one of those cases when everything will be forgotten once the hype fades way. The 2021 Mustang Mach-E just debuted at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show and it seems we were wrong.

Jimmy Dinsmore, a Mustang enthusiasts and historian, was so upset by the idea that he started a petition to change the crossover's name. And as of November 20, 1,500 have signed it and the number keeps growing.

What the Mustang Mach-E Petition Is About and How to Sign It

Dinsmore argues that the Mustang Mach-E should have the Mustang name and logo removed from it because it goes "against the essence of what Mustang stands for in automotive history." He also claims that Ford's decision to make the Mach-E a Mustang is "insulting to the tens of thousands of Mustang enthusiasts who love the Pony Car and support Ford."

"The Mustang was intended to go against the flow of the competition. Turning the Mustang into an SUV is not going against the flow. It is not being innovative, nor is it keeping true to the Mustang's heritage," he ends his statement, urging Ford to remove the Mustang name and logo from the Mach-E, described as an "otherwise fine and interesting vehicle."

The people who signed the petition obviously agree with Dinsmore and most of them claim that the Mach-E is not worthy of the name. While some simply ask Ford to remove the Mustang name and leave the Mach-E, other seem unhappy with the Mach-E's relation to the iconic Mach 1 as well. Some throw other names around, including the Taurus, while others want to see any other name as long as it's not the Mustang.

Some comments are quite harsh and claim that Ford is "alienating the entire group of true Mustang enthusiasts" and that this move is "a slap in the face of true Mustang owners."

But don't get your hopes up for Ford to drop the Mustang name from the Mach-E. A few thousand upset enthusiasts won't change anything, not to mention that it would be a costly thing to do now that Ford already spent heavy cash on marketing and merchandise.
