Is really Mercedes working on a new sports car placed below the SLR and powered by a central engine?

Until now Mercedes hasn’t been considered a real competition on the sports car market. Models from Ferrari or Lamborghini had no reasons to fear Mercedes. Not even the SLR was a success. We will see what will happen with the roadster version that will go on sale this fall.

But Mercedes has no intention to wait and see how the sales will look like. And they have reasons not to. Because the difference between the 250 hp of the SL-Class and the 626 hp of the SLR is huge. So a model placed between them is the most normal thing to do.

The new sports car will follow the McLaren F1. Under the development code of P8, the new sports car will be a strong competition for the Ferrari F430, Lamborghini Gallardo and Audi R8.

It will be powered by a supercharged 6.2 liter V8 engine. Although there are no info about the output of the car, considering that the new sports car will be placed between the SL 65 AGM (604 hp) and SLR (617 hp). It is expected to have a top speed of 200 mph and will make the 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.
