Will make you forget about the Polo GTi and Fiesta ST

While most Japanese automakers are enjoying success in both the United States and Europe, Suzuki hasn’t been doing particularly well in recent years. But that’s not to say that it hasn’t been trying. The last couple of years brought three brand-new Suzuki vehicles into dealerships — the Ignis, Baleno, and Swift — and the Japanese firm may be on its way to a better future, at least in some markets. Come 2017 and Suzuki is pushing things a bit further with a redesigned version of the Swift Sport.

The higher performance version of the small hatchback broke cover at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, and it’s more appealing than ever. The new Swift design is perfect for the hot hatch treatment, and even though the performance might not be on par with the likes of the Polo GTi, the Swift Sport sure looks like it could outgun the competition. Of course, looks won’t it help it go faster, but it’s a significant progression compared to previous iterations of the Swift Sport. And, it’s worth looking into.

The Sportiest Swift Ever Designed

I’ve never been a fan of the Suzuki Swift, but it all changed when the third-generation model arrived. It looks modern and sporty; it’s light and less complicated than the supposedly more premium offerings from Volkswagen and Ford. And, it has a unique look that blends European styling cues with Japanese Kei car features. It’s exactly what I want in a small hatchback. It has to look serious, but it also needs a playful vibe. I can’t stand a very serious, mature hatchback that draws too many cues from a sedan, and Suzuki basically read my mind.

Making the Sport that much more appealing is the fact that Suzuki finally realized that you can’t throw a couple of extra features in the standard model and call it sportier. The new Swift Sport is actually significantly different design-wise, following in the footsteps of its competitors. Up front, it has a larger grille with a honeycomb mesh, larger fog lamp housings, and a very credible splitter. The latter, alongside the side skirts, grille, and diffuser, are made from a plastic that mimics carbon fiber. Sure, we could call it cheating, but remember that this is an affordable car. And besides, the fake carbon looks pretty good. The rear fascia is equally exciting thanks to the diffuser-like element, the large twin exhaust outlets, and the bigger roof spoiler.

The interior stands out too, mainly through the red accents on the dashboard, door panels, and center console. There’s also red-accented gauges, semi-bucket front seats, a flat-bottomed steering wheel, and chrome and piano black trim. The seven-inch touchscreen keeps things modern for smartphone users.

Not so Hot, but Not a Slouch Either

Suzuki argues that the new Swift Sport delivers hot-hatch performance. Unfortunately, that’s not exactly true, as the 1.4-liter Boosterjet is rated at only 138 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. That’s significantly off compared to what you get with the Volkswagen Polo GTi and Ford Fiesta ST, both of which deliver almost 200 horsepower. Still, with a curb weight of only 970 kg and a revised suspension system, the Swift Sport is a solid option if you don’t want to pay Volkswagen or Ford premiums.
