Now that Mercedes is done with the new generation SL roadster, the company will focus its attention on a new generation AMG GT. The second generation AMG GT will be built on the same platform as the new SL and will be a serious competitor for the new generation Porsche 911. The only problem: the next AMG GT will only be offered as a coupe, as the Roadster will be replaced by the new SL.

Our spy photographers caught the future AMG GT out for a new testing session in the cold winter of Scandinavia.

Just like the new SL, the second generation AMG GT will be offered in two versions: GT63 - which was already caught testing back in January, 2022 and the GT53. It seems that both models were caught testing: the GT63 wears squared quad exhaust pipes, while the GT53 ends with four round pipes.

At a first look it may appear that the next AMG GT is just an SL with a fixed roof, but it is a lot more than that: the grille sits lower and the head lights have a different shape and a slightly more vertical position. On the side, the AMG GT will feature a fastback roofline, while in the rear the taillights will get their own unique look. Also, the AMG GT will only be offered as a 2 seater, unlike the SL which is a 2+2 seater.

Under the hood, the next AMG GT will be offered with the same 4.0 liter twin-turbo V-8 engine we've seen in the SL. In the AMG GT 55 version it will deliver 469 horses and 516 pound-feet of torque, while in the AMG GT 63 the output will go up to 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. In the upcoming future Mercedes will also offer a six-cylinder option and of course a more powerful Black Series version.

The new generation Mercedes AMG GT is expected to debut by the end of 2022 or in early 2023.
