If you’re a fan of Mario Kart, I have terrific news for you. One of Nintendo’s largest video game franchises will be making a transition to smartphones. The news comes from Nintendo, which announced in an earnings call last week what millions of fans have been clamoring for years. The game will be called Mario Kart Tour, and it’s currently “in development” by the Japanese developer and publisher.

No specific timetable has been given for the game’s release, but Nintendo did say that it will be available on smartphones and tablets “in the next financial year.” In other words, that timetable extends from April 2018 to March 2019.

The wait is going to be a little longer, but at least we now know that it’s coming.

You can also expect the same gameplay that we’ve come to know and love to be featured in the new game. It might take a while getting used to driving those cars on a smartphone, but that’s a minuscule issue relative to the ground-breaking announcement that the game is finally arriving on hand-held platforms.

Regardless if you’re a fan of Mario Kart or not, the game’s arrival as a mobile app is big news for fans of the franchise. It’s also a big break for Nintendo, which has so far received tepid reviews from its other mobile titles not named Super Mario Run.

Ready, get set, go, ladies and gentlemen. Mario Kart is finally coming to your smartphones.
