The Nissan brand and its partners are in the middle of restructuring their operations. The Japanese brand will be in charge of operations in North America, while Renault will manage things in Europe. Despite the major reorganization of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, Nissan’s executive vice president Asako Hoshino assures us that the Skyline name will live on.

The Skyline name is currently reserved for the Japanese market, while in Europe the same car is called the Infiniti Q50 and Q60. The name first appeared in 1957 as a Prince Skyline, before the small company merged with Nissan, in 1966.

That said, the GTR and Skyline names have been separated since 2002 when production of the R34 Skyline ended.

However, despite Hoshino’s claims about the Skyline name not going away, a recent report claimed that Nissan is ceasing the development of all sedans. These include the Cima (Infiniti Q70L), Fuga (Infiniti Q70), and Skyline (Infiniti Q50/Q60). Given that the development of the Skyline has been halted and Hoshino’s claims about keeping the iconic name, this begs the question: What type of car is going to wear the Skyline name?

Nissan has already put the Skyline logo on a crossover once before, calling it the Nissan Skyline Crossover. It’s the car known in other markets as the Infiniti EX (2007-2013), later rebadged as the QX50, so we might get another “Skyline Crossover” soon.
