Full-size->ke4304 trucks are designed to be workhorses that can take a lickin’ and keep on tickin’, but many are also used for personal transportation when not on the clock. That means modern trucks have to be as comfortable as a sedan->ke142 or crossover->ke288 without sacrificing capability.

In Nissan’s->ke62 latest installment of is “Truckumentary” series, engineers show how the 2016 Nissan Titan XD has been designed to be quiet, both inside and out, and offer a smooth ride free from harsh vibrations.

“A lot of the new competitors have really stepped it up in terms of isolating their trucks, so we’ve make it a huge effort with the next Titan to try to improve the upper body isolation feel so that you really feel like you’re isolated from the environment when you close the and that it is a quiet and comfortable driving experience,” says John DeYoung, Nissan’s Senior Manager of the Noise and Vibration Test Group.

Nissan engineers aren’t just driving around with the radio off. They’ve brought the big guns to detect the smallest noise and where it’s coming from. One of the high-tech instruments used is an acoustic camera. The globe-like machine not only isolates where noises are coming from, but also overlays that information in a color map on top of a 360-degree video->ke278 of the cabin.

All this research is designed to improve the livability of the Titan->ke482, making it easier to drive over long distances without driver fatigue.

Why It Matters

Trucks are becoming more luxurious with every model year and Nissan will soon have the newest truck on the block. That means the industry will be looking at the new Titan XD to be on the leading edge of technology and usability. Nissan engineers have no doubt had their work cut out thanks to the Cummins 5.0-liter turbodiesel under the hood. It’s not easy making a turbodiesel quiet or smooth.
