Veloster fans out there, please do not despair. Despite what some rumors might have suggested a couple of days ago, Hyundai is not throwing the regular version of its sporty hatchback under the bus. However, some trim levels will have to go.

A couple of days back, a report coming from Jalopnik argued that Hyundai will kill the normal Veloster as it was no longer offering incentives in the US. For more context, the same report also stated that in Canada, the non-N Veloster isn’t on sale anymore. Coming back to the US, Jalopnik quoted Cars Direct in saying that “of the roughly 200 Velosters it found on sale across Hyundai’s nationwide inventory, many were Veloster Ns.”

More clarification came from Car and Driver, who got in touch with a Hyundai spokesperson who confirmed that the regular Veloster isn’t going anywhere and that a 2022MY is indeed coming. However, as C&D points out, Hyundai “will offer fewer trim levels for the 2022 model year.” At the same time, the spokesperson didn’t specify which ones will go away and which ones will stay.

In the US, the Veloster range is split between 2.0, 2.0 Premium, Turbo R-Spec, Turbo, and Turbo Ultimate. For the first two models, power comes from a 2.0-liter gasoline mill good for 147 horsepower twinned to a six-speed manual. A six-speed auto is optional. At the same time, Turbo R-Spec and Turbo pack a turbocharged 1.6-liter unit good for 201 horsepower pairable with either a manual or a dual-clutch transmission.

The 2021 Veloster starts at $18,900. That’s the 2.0 trim. 2.0 Premium starts at $23,100, while Turbo Ultimate – the range topper – will leave you without at least $28,450.

The 2021 Hyundai Veloster N starts at a way heftier $32,250, but it packs a 2.0-liter inline-four turbo mill with 275 horsepower on tap and 260 pound-feet of torque. It’s also tuned for spirited driving and track use, with customers able to choose between a slick-shifting six-speed manual or an eight-speed wet-dual-clutch transmission.
