Turbo V-8 will get a bump in power, weight will get a cut

Mercedes just released its AMG GT 4-Door Coupe at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show, bringing high-end German power to play in an elegant four-door package. Exciting stuff for AMG fans, no doubt, but now there’s even more good news, as Australian website Car Advice is reporting that the Afflaterbach-based performance company is developing a new GT Black Series behind closed doors. “We are on the journey, we started the journey for Black Series.”

Anyone who can’t get enough of the tire-shredding performance antics of AMG should be delighted to hear that a new Black Series is on the way. Essentially a pumped-up, hardcore iteration of the current two-door AMG GT R, this track-oriented version will offer more power and more speed for more money, sitting at the top of the heap as it were.

“There is a GT variant still left,” said Tobias Moers, AMG’s head honcho, in an interview with Car Advice. “We are on the journey, we started the journey for Black Series.”

As a reminder, the current AMG GT R sports a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 producing 577 horsepower.

As a reminder, the current AMG GT R sports a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 producing 577 horsepower. Properly motivated, it’ll run from 0 to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds.

The new Black Series will definitely eclipse the R’s 577 ponies, but could also top the 630 horses offered in the new top-trim AMG GT 4-door Coupe that just dropped in Switzerland. That said, the Black is also expected to ditch the AWD used by the 4-Door Coupe in favor of a traditional RWD set-up, in which case AMG might tune out some of the boost.

Or not.

The Black Series will definitely get big aero and DTM-inspired styling, as well as less weight.

Either way, the Black Series will definitely get big aero and DTM-inspired styling, as well as less weight thanks to the inclusion of more carbon fiber and fewer creature comforts. It’ll also get harder suspension and quicker steering tuning.

Rivals will include hardcore versions of the Porsche 911, such as the 911 GT2 RS.

The new AMG GT Black Series should arrive by 2020, with a new generation of the GT dropping a few years afterward.
