Omologato, considered as one of the foremost authorities in motorsport-inspired timepieces, has launched a pair of special edition watches that pay homage to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The two watches are called the Le Mans Racing Black and the Le Mans Racing Blue and each of the two carry unique design elements that honor specific aspects of the iconic endurance race.

The Le Mans Racing Black, for instance, was created as a nod to the makeup of the endurance race, specifically portions of the race that are held at night. It’s got a black face and a plain blue stripe that runs just to the right of center. The two-tone face finish is complemented by orange arms to denote the headlights that are used during night racing.

Then there’s the Le Mans Racing Blue, which celebrates the most famous colors in Le Mans history. It has a white face, white arms, and a thick light blue and orange strip running down the same right of center location. While this looks to be the cleaner-looking design, it’s also the more detailed one as it features three dials in the middle of the face, one of which is used to display the number “24” in recognition of Le Mans’ 24-hour race.

Both models are made from stainless steel and measure close to 1.8 inches in diameter. They also share 0.86-inch black Italian grain leather straps with the Blue version featuring orange stitching and the Black version getting blue and orange stitching.

Omologato is only releasing 250 units of each version, with each timepiece priced at £249, or about $360 based on current exchange rates. Considering that the 2016 Le Mans 24 Hours kicks off in a little over a week’s time, it seems that now would be a good time to get ahold of these limited edition timepieces.

Why it matters

If there was ever a race that a watchmaker should pay tribute to, it has to be the 24 Hours of Le Mans. To Omologato’s credit, the company did an impressive job in doing that without going overboard with the design of its two limited edition watches.

Personally, I like the look of the Le Mans Racing Blue watch better. The white face and white arms is a nice clean look and the multi-coolor light blue and orange strip was taken straight out of the iconic Gulf livery from the Porsche race cars that won three times in the 1970s. Fashion wise, it suits people better because its easier to complement with the right clothes. That’s not to say that the Le Mans Racing Black watch doesn’t do that, but the edge goes, at least in my opinion, to the watch with the nod to the iconic Gulf livery.

That said, the watches don’t come cheap, although at least they don’t approach the four-digit price range of other watch makers. Still, $360 is still a steep price to pay, but if I’m going to spend that much on a watch, I’m going with the one that pays honor to one of the world’s most iconic races.
