What has the world come to? Just a decade ago, you wouldn’t think much of pick-up trucks in terms of straight-line acceleration. Sure, we’ve had things like the Ford Lightning or the GMC Syclone, but nowadays, you can buy a pick-up truck with well-over 600 and even 700 horsepower out the box. On today’s drag racing video from Sam CarLegion, we have a RAM 1500 TRX going up against a Ford F-150 Roush. The goal is simple – to find out who’s quicker at the quarter-mile.

RAM 1500 TRX

The RAM 1500 TRX, or “T-Rex” as Sam calls it, features the Hellcat, 6.2-liter, supercharged, pushrod V-8 that makes 702 horsepower and 650 pound-feet (881 Nm). It also comes with a ZF, eight-speed automatic, and 4X4. The TRX weighs a whopping 6,350 pounds (2,880 kg).

Ford F150 Roush

The Ford F-150 has been tuned by Roush – the outfit responsible for Ford’s NASCAR race cars. Instead of having their way with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, they’ve chosen to work with the 5.0-liter V-8. By giving it a supercharger, they’ve increased the output to 650 horsepower and 610 pound-feet (827 Nm). The F-150 also comes with 4X4 and has a 10-speed automatic. It’s also much lighter than the TRX, weighing in at just 4,850 pounds (2,200 kg).

The race

Will the lighter Ford prevail over the more powerful RAM TRX? Four runs were made – three from a dig and one from a 31 mph (50 km/h) roll. We’ve seen that weight is often the reason for a car to lose, even when it has more power. However, that’s not the case here, as the more primitive pushrod V-8 of the TRX works flawlessly with the ZF, eight-speed automatic.

The bigger RAM takes the lead over the lighter Ford right from the start and stays there. The rolling race gives it an even bigger advantage because of the pushrod’s massive low-end torque. That said, very few people buy a pick-up truck for its performance capabilities, so it usually comes down to which one you like more. Nevertheless, if you’d wondered which one is quicker at the quarter-mile, now you have an answer. Watch the video below to see by how much the Ford F-150 Roush loses and if the drivers could have done something more.
