A new glaze for Polaris’ three-wheeler

Originally launched in 2014, the Polaris Sligshot is an open-top three-wheeler joy rider that seeks to find a happy middle ground between street bike exhilaration and roadster-esquecomfort. It’s an interesting proposition for anyone unwilling to go full-on moto style, but still craving a bit of that in-the-elements thrill. As such, there are twin wheels up front for stops and turns, plus a single, larger wheel in the rear providing the motivation, plus a dearth of body panels for maximum exposure in the double seats. Three trim levels are offered, and now, Polaris has announced a new special edition iteration of the mid-grade SL line. It’s called the SL LE Midnight Cherry, and it’s packing new paint, upgraded “touring” graphics, and specially padded foam bucket seats.

“This limited edition model was created for riders to discover the exhilaration and adventure of the open road in the most luxurious and stylish SL available, while not compromising comfort.”

So then in one sense, the Slingshot SL LE Midnight Cherry is like a trike grand tourer. Complementing this perspective is a plethora of options, such as abundant side storage, overnight bags for the driver and passenger, upgradeable interior trim, and available all-weather covers.

The Slingshot SL Limited Edition Midnight Cherry will hit dealers this month. Pricing is set at $26,999 across the nation and $27,299 in California, which is $1,500 more than the standard Sligshot SL model.

What Makes The Slingshot SL Limited Edition Midnight Cherry Special

Let’s start by talking a little more in-depth about what makes this thing really standout – the exterior. The body panels are more less the same as the standard Slingshot, with techy, chunky looking lines front to back that simply scream for attention. On top is laid that characteristic Midnight Cherry Paint, plus there are White Pearl Accents placed on the gas cap, swing-arm, and control arms. Further White Pearl paint is used for the racing stripes on the nose. Up front are projector beam headlights, while the rear is equipped with LED taillights. The wheels are 18-inchers up front, and the rear wheel is 20 inches in diameter. All three wheels are made from cast aluminum.

Making the Midnight Cherry edition standout in the cabin is additional 5/8-inch padding for the two seats. The upholstery is pleated and bears the same cherry color as the exterior in the stitching and accents.

Making the go is a front-mounted 2.4-liter DOHC Ecotec four-cylinder engine from General Motors, producing 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque.

The rest of it is what you’d expect, with 3-point seatbelts and waterproofing in case you get caught in some weather. A clear windscreen ahead keeps the bugs out of your teeth, while lockable storage keeps thieves out of your stuff. There are even some infotainment and convenience features on board, including a back-up camera, Bluetooth support, and a Rockford Fosgate stereo system.

Making the go is a front-mounted 2.4-liter DOHC Ecotec four-cylinder engine from General Motors, producing 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque with the assistance of a standard cold-air intake. Routing the power to the rear wheel is a five-speed manual transmission, while electronic power-assist steering, ABS, and electronic stability control keep it out of the grass.
