The Polestar 5 could end up as one of the most iconic electric four-door GTs

Polestar teased three new models, including the 5, for the first time back in September 2021. Almost one year later, a prototype version of the future Polestar 5 GT made its first appearance at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed where it will run up the iconic hill twice a day during the event in the “First Glance” group. A production version will arrive in 2024, next to the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 electric SUVs.

The future Polestar 5 GT will be a high-performance electric 4-door GT with design inspiration taken from the Precept concept, first shown in 2020. A series of leaked patent images have revealed that the design of the Precept concept will be altered to be suitable for road usage. The LED light strip from the concept will be replaced by actual lower headlights, both the front bumper and side skirts will be simplified when compared to the concept, and the rear diffuser will be less aggressive. The rear suicide doors from the concept car will also be dropped and replaced with normal front-hinged doors. There are no images of the interior, but the Precept concept’s cabin was built from sustainable materials such as flax, recycled cork, recycled plastic bottles, and reclaimed fishing nets, which hopefully will also be used in the production version.

The upcoming Polestar 5 GT will challenge models like the Porsche Taycan, the Tesla Model S, the Lucid Air, and the Mercedes-Benz EQS. It will be built on a unique bonded aluminum chassis and, just like the Polestar 2, the future Polestar 5 GT will be offered with standard all-wheel drive, thanks to two electric motors: one in the front and one in the rear. The two electric motors will deliver a combined 884 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque, and they will be powered by a 103.0-kWh battery. Rumors suggest the next Polestar 5 will have a range of more than 300 miles. Just to compare things, the Taycan has a range starting from 280 miles, the Model S offers 405 miles on a single charge, and the EQS 350 miles. The real challenge is the Lucid Air, which offers a total of 520 miles - in its best configuration.

Pete Allen, Head of Polestar UK R&D, says: "Polestar 5 is shaping up to be a superb 4-door GT and a true Polestar at heart. The platform combines low-volume performance car attributes with modern technological advances to bring light-weight, high-rigidity sports car chassis technology into mass production."
