Porsche ->ke1 just unveiled the new Macan , which is essentially a smaller version of the Cayenne ->ke212 SUV, and reports already suggest a few updates are in the works for 2014. Currently the Macan->ke2674 is offered only with V-6 engines, but now it looks like the lineup will also carry a new, four-cylinder engine.

AutoExpress, which spoke to Dr Thomas Casper, manager of transmission and drivetrain development at Porsche, reports that we should expect a turbocharged, 2.0-liter, horizontally opposed, four-cylinder engine with a horsepower rating that will position it under the current 3.0-liter, V-6 engine, which delivers 340 horsepower.

More precisely, we are likely looking at something under the 300-horsepower mark. With two fewer cylinder sucking down fuel, on should expect a considerable jump in fuel economy. We also expect to see this engine find its way into the Boxster->ke570 and Cayman->ke5 -- that likely won't happen until a few months after the Macan.

We expect the four-cylinder Macan to check in at around the £40k area in Europe -- about $65k at the current exchange rates.

Porsche Macan

Porsche unveiled the Macan at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show after plenty of teasing and all sorts of rumors. The Macan is offered as the Cayenne's baby brother, so it's no surprise that it borrows most of its design elements from the larger SUV.

The U.S.-spec Macan is offered in two different versions: S and Turbo. The S version is powered by a 3.0-liter, V-6 engine with a total output of 340 horsepower, while the Turbo version gets a 3.6-liter, V-6 engine that delivers 400 horsepower.

Europeans get a crack at the Macan S Diesel version, which gets a 3.0-liter, V-6 diesel engine that puts out 258 horsepower.
