When the current Porsche Macan makes its generational shift in 2022 or 2023, it was originally expected to make the shift into EV territory as well. The original “plan” was for the next-gen Macan to be offered only as an EV and ditch the ICE altogether. All that has apparently changed, at least to some extent, if a new report is to be believed. Let us introduce you to the dual-Macan Strategy.

The Dual-Macan Strategy Eases the Shift to EV But Also Gives Consumers Options

The Macan has a very important role for Porsche. It’s the brand’s best-setting model and one slip-up could have dire consequences in the short- and long-term. Moving it into electric territory, though, is also a necessary evil if Porsche is ever going to low its fleetwide emissions footprint. And, that’s where the dual-Macan strategy comes into play.

So, the current then-facelifted Macan will actually look more like a next-gen model than what we know it to be today. The idea behind this is that customers who want to go electric can, while those who still want to hold off in familiar ICE territory can go with the facelifted Macan instead. They’ll get the same appearance and technology, but won’t be forced to ditch the ICE they’ve grown attached to.

More than that, this will also cut the risk factor considerably. Assuming that a large number of Macan buyers don’t want an EV, such a shift could be devastating. With the dual-Macan strategy, Porsche can keep the money flowing in and use it to fund electrification elsewhere in the lineup wile still offsetting the development costs of the next-gen Macan.

So, while it might seem a little outlandish, the dual-Macan strategy makes sense from a business standpoint, and it makes sense for us, the consumers, too. This way, we’ll actually have a choice of what drivetrain to go with, at least in the short-term, anyway.
