Porsche’s "Magic Mirror" Makes Any Car Look Like a Macan: Video
It is not the first time, nor will it be the last time that a car brand tries a novel marketing trick in order to draw in more customers, especially when we are talking about an all-new car without a predecessor. I would probably file the promotion gimmick in the video under "cute," since it is funny but not exactly hilarious.
In short, part of the 2015 Macan’s introduction in the United states, Porsche teamed up with Thinkingbox and created a so-called "Magic Mirror" in Los Angeles. In theory, this mirror will transform the reflection of any car that is driving by into a Porsche Macan. It is not exactly smoke and mirrors, at least not in the traditional "magician" sense, as the system is simply based on a few cameras, two large LCD or LED screens to act as the "mirrors" and motion-tracking software to tie everything together. It seems that the folks from Thinkinbox really know what they’re doing.
The result is, as I mentioned, cute, but the overall editing of the video makes it look a bit too staged for something that should appear as candid as possible. Either way, it seems that over the 10 days that the "magic mirror" was in the parking lot of a mall, no less than 900 drivers "got to see what it’s like to drive up in a new Porsche Macan."
As a refresher, the new Porsche Macan is the Cayenne’s baby brother and it was developed starting with the Audi Q5 as a base. Porsche expects to move quite a lot of them and outsell the Cayenne by a large margin after it reaches most markets, with the U.S. being the largest one. I can’t help but wonder what would have happened if someone had actually pulled up in a Porsche Macan in front of that mirror.
