Porsche’s New Partnership with PUMA is all the Sneaker Hype You Need on a Monday
Don’t expect all 500 pairs of this sneaker collection to last longby Kirby Garlitos, on LISTEN 04:12
The Porsche 911 Turbo is arguably one of the most iconic cars in history. A car of that stature doesn’t just stay a car; its name lives on in other ways like, say, a limited-edition sneaker line that comes courtesy of Porsche’s partnership with sports apparel company PUMA.
The two German brands are teaming up to create this line of special edition shoes to celebrate the legend of the 911 Turbo. Only 500 pairs of shoes will be created across the entire size range, and if you’re looking to score a pair, you best be quick about it. The range will launch on November 17, 2020, and if it’s as hyped as we think it is, those 500 pairs will be gone faster than the 992-generation 911 Turbo can hit a quarter-mile. That’s 10.1 seconds at 137 mph, by the way.
Called the PUMA x Porsche collection, the shoes are heavily inspired by the Porsche 911 Turbo, specifically, the Future Rider and Speedboat model outlines that the German automaker has used on almost all versions of the 911 Turbo.
The Future Rider represents the first four generations of air-cooled 911 Turbos (the Type 930 3.0L and 3.3, Type 964, and Type 993) while the motorsport-inspired Speedcat silhouette is the one largely used on the modern 911 Turbo variants, including the new 992-generation model.
Porsche and PUMA are essentially offering two different styles of sneakers. Each style is dressed in Porsche factory colors — Riviera Blue, Guards Red, Saffron Yellow Metallic, and GT Silver Metallic — that are specific to a particular 911 Turbo model. The 911 Turbo Type 996 x Puma Speedcat, for example, wears the GT Silver Metallic colorway with red accents and lighter silver trim that call back to the 996-generation 911. The 911 Turbo Type 992 x Puma Speedcat, on the other hand, is the sleekest-looking of the collection with the dark blue and the white sole look.
Which of these shoes would I buy?
I’m a sucker for flashy colors when it comes to shoes so I have my eye on the 911 Turbo Type 991 x Puma Speedcat. I like the sportier and more modern look of the Speedcat compared to the Future Rider and the explosion of yellow on this pair is calling to me. I like that Puma matched it with a black sole and red accents, too. That’s the kind of vibe I want from my PUMA x Porsche collection, and the Type 991 x Speedcat is the only one that speaks to my style.
I do want to give an honorable mention to the 911 Turbo Type 930 3.3L x Future Rider. I like how the Guards Red colorway translates to the shoes, particularly on the suede material. The black accent works well with the Guards Red color and the black Porsche tab on the sole of the shoes is a nice touch, too.
How much will a pair cost?
Pricing for the shoes starts at $150, but that’s not what you have to pay attention to. Production of each pair is limited to just 500 units across all sizes, so you have to be quick if you want to score a pair.
The collection will be sold online, specifically on the Porsche and Puma sites. Puma’s flagship store in New York City will also carry the selection in limited quantities. It’s the same story at Porsche Design stores in Los Angeles and Miami, as well as the Porsche Experience Centers in Atlanta and Los Angeles.
Porsche notes that the window to score a pair of sneakers is just 2.7 seconds. I don’t know if Porsche is serious about that or it’s just a tongue-in-cheek reference to the 992-generation 911 Turbo’s 0-to-60-mph time.
Either way, I wouldn’t wait around for these sneakers. I want one so you best believe I’m getting one early. So should you if you want a pair, too.
