After a four-year absence, Porsche will be making a comeback to the 2011 Detroit Auto Show with a "spectacular new concept that points towards a future road going model." This new concept car is closely related to the918 Spyder concept from which it takes key components, including elements of its platform.

"Porsche’s return demonstrates the relevancy of the Detroit show for luxury manufacturers," said Rebecca Lindland, an analyst at IHS Automotive in Lexington, Mass. "They target a very specific audience with their cars and the U.S. market is incredibly important for Porsche."

The German publication, AutoZeitung, suggests that this new model is known as the 929 and that it will be revealed sometime in 2013. A hybrid drivetrain that will combine a 4.8 liter V8 Biturbo engine with three electric motors, something similar to the 918 Spyder, is expected to be found under the hood.

"We’ll have something spectacular to show there," Hans-Gerd Bode, a spokesman at the Stuttgart-based carmaker, said in an interview. "You’ll have to wait and be surprised."

The new Corvette ZR1 and the Dodge Viper ACR are cresting the $100K mark, but with the demise of the Ford GT, there’s nothing else coming out of Detroit to take on the Ferrari F430, the Lamborghini Gallardo, the Aston Martin V8 Vantage, and the Porsche 911 GT2.

That would be the mid-engine Saleen S5S Raptor super car concept that debuted at this year’s New York auto show.

I wonder if it will be a more production ready variant of the 918 with a hardtop and more conventional, though perhaps still hybrid, powertrain?

i think it’s clever marketing. most people don’t know (or don’t care) that a new model is on the way, and it creates new interest in their ageing car, so they can shift a few more units before the end of its life.

it would be comically cliche evil if they did the classic bait and switch and put a normal dumb ICE in the 918. then I hope Merkel will finally wake up and kick some evil ass.

Its been a year now since the first 918 Spyder pop up over the internet, still I hasn’t gone into production even the prototype one. I’m really excited about it.

Porsche always has been more conservative in design, it’s general changes are always subtile and always keeping in mind the iconic shape that made the brand famous. I think this new super car will bring the elements that we will see in the next 5-10 years of Porsche design.

I cannot believe, Porsche will design a supercar like this. It’s Porsche-unlike with its aggressive front shape and the flat hood.
