Already seven years old as of 2018, the current BMW 3 Series is getting a bit long in the tooth, especially when compared to the much newer Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Audi A4. Fortunately, a brand-new model is in the works for a couple of years now, and it's expected to break cover by the end of 2018. While the test cars are still camouflaged inside and out, the upcoming 3 Series isn't much of a mystery design-wise, as it will be heavily based on the latest 5 Series. It might take a while until we see the actual car, but a recent leak may have just uncovered the entire engine lineup of the new compact.

Gasoline Engines

The gasoline range will begin with the same 318i model, but while the outgoing drivetrain cranks out 134 horsepower, the new one will generate 150 horses, quite the significant bump. According to the leak, this engine will mate to either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic and will be rear-wheel-driven only. Next in line is the 320i, also carried over from the previous generation. Unlike the 318i, which uses a 1.5-liter three-cylinder, this trim will use a four-pot. The revised internals will increase output from 181 horsepower to 204 horses. The same manual and automatic gearboxes will be offered, but this model will also get option all-wheel drive. An Efficient Dynamics version of this model will be offered with 170 horsepower.

The same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine will inject 265 horsepower in the 330i variant. That's a 17-horsepower upgrade over the outgoing model. Also available with xDrive, the 330i will get the eight-speed automatic transmission only. The range-topping M340i model (there will be an M3 too, of course), will get 380 horsepower, the eight-speed automatic, and standard all-wheel drive. There's no 340i model in this sheet, so it's safe to assume that the M340i will bridge the gap between the 330i and the M3. At least at first.

Diesels

Moving over to oil burners, it appears that BMW will keep the same badges. First up is 316d, rated at 136 horsepower in this chart, a significant increase from the previous 114 horses. Next on the list is 318d, which gets a boost from the previous 148 horsepower to 163 horses. Both the 316d and 318d will get standard six-speed manuals and optional eight-speed automatics. Both will be RWD models only.

More oomph will come from the 320d model, rated at 204 horsepower for the new generation. The ougoing model has 188 horses, so there's an extra 16 horsepower to enjoy. Unlike the 316d and 318d, the 320d will get optional all-wheel drive. The 325d version will also get a power bump, from 215 to 238 horsepower, while the 330d will gain an extra 10 horses for a new output of 265 horsepower. These two models will be restricted to the eight-speed automatic, but both RWD and AWD models will be available.

The old 335d will be replaced by a model called the M340d, with the usual M Sport updates inside and out. Output for this sedan is set at up to 340 horsepower versus the 308 horses of the old model. The eight-speed automatic and the xDrive all-wheel drive system will be standard.

Hybrids

Two gasoline-electric hybrids will be offered according to the sheet, most likely equipped with 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines. The 325e iPerformance will deliver 230 horsepower, while the 330e iPerformance will come with 264 horses on tap. BMW won't offer manual transmissions or RWD drivetrains for these cars.
