Prepare To Sell Your Kidneys If You Want Options On Your Ferrari Portofino
There’s incredulous pricing, and then there’s Ferrari-level incredulous pricingby Kirby, on
The Ferrari Portofino is the newest Ferrari to come with a folding hardtop, taking the reins from the California T to fill that specific role in automaker’s lineup. The sports car itself is expected to fetch a price tag of a little over $300,000. That’s not surprising at all. Ferrari has even started taking orders for the Portofino, as one member of the Ferrari Chat forum announced. As it turns out, that announcement also came with a bit of a surprising revelation: the options list that Ferrari is including comes with some notable features, none more surprising than Ferrari’s asking price for some of them.
How about a carbon fiber cup holder for exactly $2,531?
Care for a front grille design that costs over $1,600? How about a carbon fiber cup holder for exactly $2,531? You read that right, folks. Ferrari’s asking over $2,500 for a cup holder. Sure, it’s made from carbon fiber, but what good does that actually if all it does is, you know, hold cups. If these items aren’t to your liking, you can burn $4,219 on Apple CarPlay. Just a point of order here: that’s the same feature that comes standard on many vehicles that are priced a tenth of the Portofino, including all Honda Civics with an EX-trim or higher.
Does the word “egregious” properly describe how some of these options are priced? Maybe it still doesn’t properly encapsulate the sheer lunacy of having to pay almost $5,000 on Apple CarPlay or over $2,500 on a carbon fiber cup holder. To help you guys out gain a little more perspective, here are a few other options that Ferrari is offering for the Portofino and their corresponding price tags.
If these items aren’t to your liking, you can burn $4,219 on Apple CarPlay.
There are a number of front grilles that you can buy on top of the standard one that’s already fitted into your car. These bad boys cost $1,687. If you’re a smoker, you can opt for the smoking kit for the “paltry” sum of $811. Don’t want the floor of your Portofino getting dirty? Don’t worry, Ferrari has you covered with its $1,350 color floor mats! But hey, they have the Prancing Horse logo on them!
If you’re in the mood to keep burning your money, how about a $1,100 fire extinguisher? See what I did there? You can buy that, or if you still have some brain cells up there, you can just opt for a separate extinguisher that comes with the necessary mounting bracket for just $60 in your local hardware.
If there’s anything that this option list is telling us, it’s that Ferrari doesn’t play by our rules. Then again, we’ve known that from the beginning so why are we really surprised, right?
