To say Hoonigan’s drag races are epic is an understatement. For a while, we have been seeing some of the most insane showdowns with some of the weirdest builds ever, but this one takes things even further. It may look like a classic Ford versus Chevrolet duel, but there’s a twist. Hoongan’s very own homage to the Fast & Furious, Ford F-150 Lightning, driven by Paul Walker goes up against an all-American, insanely loud Chevy K5 Jimmy Big Block V-8.

Ford F-150 “Frightning”

When a car has a nickname, you know something’s up. The Hoonigan crew decided to build an homage to the parts truck, driven by Paul Walker, in the original Fast & Furious movie, only this one has a twist. By that, we mean a 2JZ GTE in place of the 5.4-liter supercharged V-8. The car is still a work in progress and in its current state, makes 500 horsepower to the rear wheels. We don’t know the weight, but by the looks of it, it’s the lighter of the two cars.

1978 Chevrolet K5 Jimmy

The K5 Jimmy is far from stock. It still looks like a tank and has the aerodynamics of a block of concrete to an extent where the front hood wants to fly off, but it’s what under the hood it that matters. It’s a 573 cubic-inch Big Block V-8 that has been fully built and makes 733 horsepower and over 700 pound-feet (950 Nm). As Zac (the driver) describes it, “it has zero safety equipment and way too much power”. Apparently, an abysmal gas mileage too, but wait until you hear the engine.

On paper, nothing makes sense

The Ford F-150 “Frightening” has less power, but also weighs less. It has Nitto NTO5R drag slicks and the tailgate “mod”. The Chevy K5 just doesn’t care. It has all the displacement and can be heard from 10 miles away. However, it also has off-road tires with a high sidewall. Everything about these cars screams “sketchy AF”.

The Drag races

Round one, as always, is a heads-up race at 1,000 feet. The sound of the 2JZ-powered Ford F-150 is drowned out by the Big Block Chevy, which sounds like a bunch of furious chainsaws. Chevy takes an early lead, but after a while, it looks like it hit a brick wall. The Ford F-150 took the lead, but the Chevy quickly stopped the bleeding. Still, the 2JZ-powered Ford won by a hood.

Round two is at 500 feet and Chevy gets the hit. Needless to say, this was a one-sided battle, with the V-8-powered Chevrolet pulling a bus length on the Ford F-150 “Frightening”. Will a heads-up race be any different? The more powerful Chevy wins at 500 feet, every time.

As a bonus, a fourth race was done. Suppy, the original driver of the Ford was swapped, because of miss-shifting. While the F-150 “Frightening” got a driver mod, it still wasn’t enough to beat the all-mighty, all-American V-8 Chevy K5 Jimmy.

While none of this made any sense, this edition of "This vs That" was one of the most bonkers ones we have ever witnessed. When the Hoonigan-built, 2JZ-powered Ford F-150 gains more power, it should make for a more interesting race. Until then, the Chevy K5 Jimmy Big Block goes home a winner, albeit with a lot of gas stops.
