After decades on the shelf, the 2020 Toyota Supra is finally here, dropping cover at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show amid a flurry of hype and criticism. However, while some of the haters out there poo-poo the fifth-gen’s styling, we think this fresh take from Rain Prisk is undeniably cool.
Extra Roof Equals Extra Cool
I’ll admit it - I’m a sucker for long rooflines on a sporty platform. I’ve frequently been a proponent of the resurrection of the Subaru WRX wagon, so it should come as no surprise that I’m digging this new shooting brake Supra rendering.
Surprisingly, the artist didn’t change a whole lot to create it, as explained in a comment made to the official Rain Prisk Facebook page after a fan asked about the visual changes:
“Not much really,” the post reads, “new wheels, lower, new shape for the side window, also lowered the roof, made the wheel arches a bit bigger, and that’s pretty much it.”
For reference, a shooting brake is different from a wagon or a hatchback. The body style is actually a nod to the horse-drawn wagons used in the late 19th-century to transport guns and hunters to various hunting grounds. The look is different from the rounder hatchback style and boxier wagon style. Other shooting brake examples include the Ferrari FF and BMW Z3 M Coupe, while an older example would be the Ferrari 330 GT.
As for a shooting brake version of the 2020 Toyota Supra, don’t hold your breath. Not only is the long-roof body style about as niche as they get these days (especially in the U.S.), but Toyota created the fifth-gen Supra using bits from BMW’s catalogue, which means developing any new kind of iteration is pretty much out of the question. Unless, of course, you’re talking about a 2020 Toyota Supra Convertible, that is.
